Chapter Six

By the time they were ready to go, the entire quarter was dark and mostly empty. The johns had scattered, leaving houses full of overworked prostitutes to lean out doorways and windows, watching as Paris cleared each house one by one. Buses came and went, and it wasn’t until Paris had finally declared them done that Shane got in the back of the limo with them and called Aki.

He’d worried all day. But not missed a single call. Which made Shane worry even more. Aki’s phone rang four times before going to his voicemail. He pulled up the link to his home security system. Only according to Miles, Aki wasn’t home. Had he been feeling well enough to go out somewhere with Ivy?

Shane rang Aki’s phone again. This time it was Ivy who answered right before the fourth, sounding a little breathless. “Sorry, sorry. Forgot the phone on the table thing.”

“What table thing? Where’s Aki?”

Candy and Marc crawled into the back of the limo. Neither speaking nor looking at each other. Had they been fighting again?

“We’re with Dr. Vitoric at Sins,” Ivy said. “But don’t worry. Really. Everything is okay. His tummy was just hurting and I thought we should go just in case and have him looked at so you wouldn’t worry ‘cause I knew you’d worry, because of course you would, he’s your whole world. I had Jack pick us up and everything. He wouldn’t let Aki walk at all. No stairs or anything. He carried him right to the doctor and has been here the whole time. And Aki’s okay. Everyone thinks he’s okay. So it’s probably nothing to worry about.”

Shane had to parse through Ivy’s long winded ramble for a minute. “Okay. So Aki woke up. His stomach still hurt. So you called Jack to come and take you both to Dr. Vitoric.” Just the facts. He could deal with the facts and pray there was nothing seriously wrong with Aki while he was away. “Is Dr. Vitoric available to talk?”

“Um, no. I don’t know where she is right at this second.”

“Okay. And where is Aki?”

“Getting a scan?”

“Are you asking me or telling me?”

“I think they took him down to a scan.”

“They? You mean Dr. Vitoric.”

“Yes.”

“But you said he’s fine.”

“Yes?”

Shane sighed. This was not getting his questions answered. “Where’s Jack?”

“He went with Aki for the scan.”

“Jack and Dr. Vitoric?”

“Yes.”

Shane ran a hand through his hair. Normally Ivy wasn’t this flighty. Did that mean something was wrong? Shane narrowed his eyes at Candy, then crooked his finger in Candy’s direction. “Come here,” Shane mouthed to him.

Candy frowned, but crossed the space and took the seat beside Shane. They were still waiting for Paris to actually get into the car. Shane pushed the phone into Candy’s hands.

“Ask him where Aki is. Do it authoritative like,” Shane said.

Candy frowned at the phone, which said it was connected to Aki, but put it to his ear. “Hello?”

Shane heard Ivy’s enthusiastic greeting to Candy. Ivy rambled for a minute. “Okay, so you’re at Sins because Aki’s not feeling well,” Candy said.
